Phalla Messina is a second year Management Intern (MI). Phalla graduated from the University of Maryland with a Bachelor of Science degree in Behavioral and Community Health. She started her career at the NIH as a public affairs specialist at the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD) in 2010. While at NIDCD, she led a health education campaign and community outreach efforts, in addition to drafting content for NIDCD’s websites and social media. Her personal passion is health and wellness, and she fully supports NIH's mission.
Since becoming an MI in 2021, her goal was to diversify her skillset in other administrative areas to better serve the NIH community. Phalla has rotated at the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR), Financial Management Branch, National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS), Management Analysis and Policy office, and the Office of Human Resources (OHR), Office of Communications and Strategy. Her fourth rotation is at the Office of Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI).
While in the MI program, Phalla has participated in several committees and projects, including coordinating a Management Seminar Series about developing mindfulness, co-chairing the 2022 Presidential Management Fellows (PMF)/MI orientation committee, and co-leading the LinkedIn NIH Administrative Training Committee (ATC), Intern/Fellow, and Alumni Networking Group project. In addition, she participated in the Deputy Director for Management (DDM) Seminar Series Research Group, MI Recruitment Committee, and Intern/Fellow Culture Committee.
