Where were you born?

Monterey, California

What school did you attend?

Mt. Saints Mary's University

What gained you interest in the NIH?

I was brought on under the outstanding scholars program in a career ladder position. I knew I wanted to work for the Federal Government. I was approached by three different agencies in the same week and NIH seemed to be the most interesting. I was interested in the good science and work that this agency does.

What kind of work do you do at the NIH?

I am a supervisory contracting officer and section chief. I have worked on research and development contracts as well as service contracts.

What message would you like to send to young Hispanics who are considering going to college?

I was a non-traditional college student, meaning that I went to college in my late 30s while raising my children and working jobs that weren't so fun. Many times, the only jobs I could get before my degree were low paying temporary jobs without opportunity for advancement. I was frustrated because I knew that I could do more. I regret not going to college sooner because my BSBA and MBA opened so many doors and opportunities for me. My education and hard work brought me to the senior leadership level today. It opened up opportunities to get into executive coaching programs and senior leadership programs with in the Federal Government. I say don't give up on your dreams of an education. I know it is hard sometimes but it is worth the effort and the pay off is an amazing career.
