In March of 2017, the Office of Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) celebrated Women in History with the theme “Be Inspired.” In honor of NIH’s Commitment to EDI 365, and in support of equal opportunities for women to achieve to their fullest potential, EDI is excited to announce that Susan L. Taylor, Editor in Chief Emeritus of Essence Magazine, will be delivering an inspirational message to the NIH on May 22nd at 11:00 am at the Lipsett Auditorium.

Susan joined Essence in 1970 and was the only single mom on staff. As she moved up the editorial ladder, she stressed the importance of enabling female staffers to live their personal lives as fully as their professional lives. Serving as Editor-in-Chief for 19 years, she has helped Essence successfully expand beyond its publication in the upliftment of women with branded products and events such as the Women Who Are Shaping the World Leadership Summit. Susan L. Taylor is the first and only African-American woman recognized by the Magazine Publishers of America, winning the industry’s highest honor-- the Henry Johnson Fisher Award. Susan was also inducted into the American Society of Magazine Editors Hall of Fame.

In addition to being a gifted writer, speaker, and entrepreneur, Susan L. Taylor is the Founder & CEO of National CARES Mentoring Movement. CARES is a growing transformational mentoring program focusing on emotional, social, and academic development. It is also a recruitment organization dedicated to healing and advancing the lives of our Nation’s youth.

The Office of Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion is honored to welcome the esteemed Susan L. Taylor to the NIH to deliver her inspirational message of encouragement and empowerment.
