Where were you born?

San Salvador, El Salvador

What school did you attend?

Southern Illinois University at Carbondale

What gained you interest in the NIH?

I was attracted to the NIH Student Career Experience Program, which was such a unique opportunity for me to begin working at NIH. I was fairly new in this country and needed to work while going to school. This program allowed me to stay in school through college while earning money by working part time. Once I completed college, I was offered a full-time position as a Grants Program Assistant. Nine years ago, NIH came through for me again. I started my professional career as an Information Technology Project Manager. I am very grateful for the handful of NIH leaders who have nurtured and mentored me into the employee I have become.

What kind of work do you do at the NIH?

My career is in Information Technology. I work as a Project Manager. I manage the building of customized websites in support of the grants business process in the National Institute of General Medical Sciences. I'm also a Contracting Officer’s Representative which allows me to participate in contract related tasks.

What message would you like to send to young Hispanics who are considering going to college?

College is a way to hone your character traits, such as perseverance and focus. Staying in and completing “the course” sets your path to bigger and better opportunities.
