From the NIH Director: 2019 National Hispanic Heritage Month

Francis S. Collins, M.D., Ph.D.

Dear NIH Family:

I am pleased to announce that NIH will celebrate National Hispanic Heritage Month from September 15 through October 15. We are proud to once again recognize the countless ways in which Hispanics and Latino Americans contribute to the mission of NIH.

In keeping with this year’s national theme, “Hispanic Americans: A History of Serving Our Nation,” I invite you to visit EDI's web campaign, which features profiles of Hispanic and Latino principal and senior investigators and employees at NIH. I hope you take time to appreciate the work of these accomplished scientists and the messages to students about the importance of higher education. Additionally, the EDI Blog will feature our very own diversity and inclusion “change agents.” These are everyday people who do small things that contribute significantly.

NIH employees are also invited to participate in this year’s HHS Hispanic Heritage Month Observance program featuring Dr. Elena Rios, President & CEO of the National Hispanic Medical Association, and Dr. Eliseo J. Pérez-Stable, Director of the National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities. The program will be available via webcast on Tuesday, September 24, from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.

I am proud of the work of every member of our team and the knowledge, passion, and broad perspectives that we bring to every challenge. I hope this campaign will inspire you to learn more about the contributions of our team and the strength in diversity that allows us to find innovative solutions to complex health challenges.

To learn more about Hispanic Heritage Month 2019 and how you can support the work we are doing across NIH, please visit the EDI website or contact the Hispanic Portfolio Strategist, Gerard Roman, at 301-827-4677 or roman@od.nih.gov.

Sincerely yours,

Francis S. Collins, M.D., Ph.D.
Director
